NORDISK PREPPER’S answers to frequently asked Prepping questions (FAQ).

What is prepping, and why is it important?

Prepping, short for “preparation,” refers to the proactive process of preparing oneself, family, or community for potential emergencies or disasters. It involves acquiring knowledge, skills, and resources to mitigate risks and ensure resilience in the face of unforeseen events.

How do I start prepping, and where should I begin?

Starting prepping can be as simple as assessing potential risks in your area, such as natural disasters or power outages, and gradually building up your emergency supplies. Begin by creating a basic emergency kit with essentials like water, food, first aid supplies, and communication tools.

What are the essential items or supplies I need for prepping?

Essential items for prepping include water and water purification methods, non-perishable food items, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, a multi-tool, hygiene supplies, and important documents. Additionally, consider items specific to your family’s needs, such as medications, baby supplies, or pet care items.

What are the different types of emergencies or disasters I should prepare for?

Prepping involves preparing for a wide range of emergencies, including natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and wildfires, as well as human-made events like power outages, civil unrest, or pandemics. It’s important to consider the specific risks and hazards relevant to your location and circumstances.

How can I incorporate prepping into my daily life without feeling overwhelmed?

Incorporating prepping into your daily life can be done gradually by making small changes over time. Start by setting aside a small budget for emergency supplies each month, practicing basic skills like first aid or fire safety, and discussing emergency plans with your family.

Where can I find reliable information and resources to help me with prepping?

Reliable sources of information and resources for prepping include government websites, emergency management agencies, community preparedness organizations, and reputable prepping forums or websites. Look for information that is up-to-date, evidence-based, and tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.

NORDISK PREPPER’S answers to frequently asked Outdoor questions (FAQ).

What is needed on a day hike?

A well-equipped backpack, a pair of sturdy shoes or boots and a water bottle are a good start for any hike. An outdoor kitchen and food as well as energy bars or fruit as a snack are also good to replenish your energy during the day. In order for the trip to be as enjoyable as possible, it is good to choose clothes that are suitable for hiking in different weather. A pair of hiking pants, a merino wool sweater and a shell jacket that protects against rain will go a long way. Map, compass, first aid kit and a mobile phone with a charged battery are good if you are going to hike outside built-up areas where you are unfamiliar with the environment.

How heavy a backpack should I take with me?

How much you can carry depends entirely on how trained you are, how far you have to go and what the terrain looks like. An adult person in average physical shape with a good hiking backpack and used to hiking can aim for 15-20 kg. 25-30kg can be carried if you are in very good shape or if you are going a short and easy distance.

What should I do to stop getting too cold from sleeping outdoors?

Make sure you are warm, dry and have the right amount of clothes on before crawling into your sleeping bag. Eat properly and preferably drink something warm and do some evening gymnastics in the evening so the body keeps the heat better. Have a thermos available with something warm – good to have both during the night and for a first breakfast in the sleeping bag. A heat-resistant bottle filled with hot water and wearing a sock acts as an extra element in the sleeping bag. And should you wake up cold during the night, don’t be afraid to leave the sleeping bag to move a little, it can provide better warmth and sleep than if you continue to huddle.

How do you select where to pitch your tent for a night?

Camping on durable ground in nature for one to two days is part of the right of way, but you may not pitch your tent and use it as a camp for a week without permission from the landowner. In nature reserves and national parks, special rules often apply. There may be a ban on camping or that you may only camp on designated camping sites. When camping, you should always think about not damaging the vegetation, for example plants such as heather and lichen are sensitive. Make sure you are camping on durable ground and always read the rules that apply to the area you intend to visit.

Can I pitch my tent anywhere in Sweden?

In national parks and nature reserves, there are often special rules for camping and fires, what you can do and what you can pick. Always check what applies locally. In one area it may be permitted to camp in specially designated places, even within protected natural areas, while in other areas there may be a total ban on camping. The same applies to fire. There may also be restrictions on picking berries or plants, or even taking stones home. There are often notice boards, brochures or – as in many national parks – a nature room with information about what applies. You can often also find information on the municipality’s website. A good rule of thumb is to always leave the place as nice as when you arrived, regardless of where you camp.

Can I drink water straight from a stream?

In the mountains, it is usually perfectly safe to drink in the gushing streams. As long as the water is bubbling and clear, it is considered drinkable. Avoid stagnant enclosures, where the water can be bad, and make sure there are no dead animals upstream that could contaminate the water. If you are unsure about the water quality, you can always let the water boil for a couple of minutes or filter the water with a water purifier.

What are good snacks to take on a day’s walking?

We would like to recommend energy bars. Good energy bars have good ingredients, nutritional values and high energy content, a very good snack for hiking and other activities that can also be eaten while walking. Another tip is hunter’s snuff. Jägarsnus can be mixed with nuts, chopped chocolate and raisins, but of course you can vary according to your taste. A very good conversation that immediately lifts the mood on the hike!
