Crisis Preparedness 101: Keeping Safe, Being Prepared.

So, imagine this: the power goes out, the stores are closed, and you’re left to fend for yourself for a few days. Sounds a bit daunting, right? But fear not, because being prepared for such situations doesn’t have to be rocket science. In fact, with a bit of know-how and the right gear, you can weather the storm (literally) like a pro.

1. Keeping Warm

When the temperature drops, keeping warm becomes priority number one. Having a sleeping bag handy can make all the difference between warm and cosy or a sleepless night. Keep your sleeping bag in an easy-to-reach spot at home, so you can grab it even in the dark. And don’t forget that adding a blanket or making sure you wrap up warm with different layers of clothing are also great ways to keep out the cold.

2. Fight Back Against Moisture

It’s not just the cold that bites when the power’s out—it’s the humidity, the dampness in the air. Lighting candles, firing up a camping stove, or even cuddling around a fireplace outside can help dry things out, but be careful make sure you follow best practices when it comes to having heat in a confined space or indoors. For example, tempting as it may be – do not bring your barbecue (BBQ) into your tent, it gives out carbon monoxide and continues to do so even after you have finished using them. Charcoals will continue to smoulder and give out carbon monoxide and if it is held in a closed environment, such as the limited area inside a tent, it can use the oxygen in there to keep burning and be fatal for the occupants.

3. The Kitchen

In times of crisis, the kitchen becomes your sanctuary. Forget heating the entire house—focus on one room instead. Close the doors, gather your supplies, and huddle together for warmth. Bonus points for cooking up a storm while you’re at it—nothing beats a hot meal to lift the spirits.

4. Hydration Station

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink? Not if you’re prepared. Stock up on drinking water and rotate it regularly to keep it fresh. And if standing water does not fill you with confidence of its quality, invest in a water filter for some extra peace of mind.

5. Food, Glorious Food

No need to panic-buy canned goods like it’s the end of the world. Just make sure you’ve got enough food to last you a week or so. Stick to the basics—think pasta, rice, and canned veggies—and don’t forget the snacks as a pick-me-up.

6. Keep It Simple, Keep It Quick

When hunger strikes, you’ll want food that’s fast and fuss-free. Save the gourmet meals for another day and opt for quick-cook staples instead. Instant noodles, anyone? They may not be gourmet, but they’ll get the job done when you are hungry and provide you with some sustenance.

7. Fire Up the Grill

An outdoor kitchen isn’t just for summer BBQs—it’s a lifesaver in a pinch. Practice using yours ahead of time, and stock up on fuel so you’re not left high and dry when the lights go out.

8. Communication is Key

In a crisis, your phone might be as useful as a paperweight. Plan ahead with your family on what to do if you can’t get in touch. And don’t panic if you can’t reach them right away—chances are, they’re dealing with the same chaos you are.

9. Know Your Way Around

Google Maps won’t be much help when the grid goes down. Keep physical maps handy, so you can navigate your way to safety even without Wi-Fi.

10. Keep It Clean

When the water stops flowing, hygiene becomes a bit trickier. Stock up on wet wipes, conserve water where you can, and get creative with your cleaning routines. Is there a lake nearby whose water can be used or dish water that can be used to flush the toilet. Understand the differences between black and grey water. Every drop counts!

Be prepared

Keep a well-stocked first aid kit which you can always add to with essentials like a mosquito spray, sunscreen, and pain relievers. And to help you get around in the darkness, and free up your hands make sure you have a headlamp, a storm kitchen if the electricity is out so that you can cook and to help meet most challenges you come across a multi-tool gives you options from screw drivers to scissors.
