Who are the MSB?

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) – Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap) is responsible for helping society prepare for major accidents, crises and the consequences of war, and has commissioned a new version of the brochure “In case of crisis or war”.

What is the new brochure for?

The brochure “In case of crisis or war” contains vital information that affects everyone living in Sweden who is 16 years of age or over. In the new brochure you will get advice on how to prepare yourself, and what to do if crisis or war comes.

What’s happening?

For two weeks, starting 18 November, a new version of the brochure “Om kris eller krig” will be sent out to all 5.2 million households in Sweden.

The brochure is distributed in November and will be translated into eleven languages as well as easy Swedish. It will also be available as an audio file in Swedish and English, interpreted in sign language and translated into Braille.

Why is it printed?

Although Sweden is renown for it’s desire to do as much as possible using digital platforms, having a printed version of the brochure means that the information is always available even if the mobile network is down. So, all households once they receive their copy must keep it safe at hand.

Questions about the brochure

The MSB has started a contact centre that can answer questions by phone on 0771-240 240. From 18 to 29 November, you can call weekdays 08:00–20:00 and weekends 09:00–16:00. From 30 November, opening hours are 09:00–16:00 on weekdays. It is also possible to email questions to broschyren@msb.se.

The main target group for the contact centre are private individuals (i.e. you and me), but municipalities, county administrative boards and other groups are also welcome to contact MSB via these channels.

Where can I find the brochure?

Between 18th to 29th November, a printed version of the brochure will be sent out to all households, there are also digital, audio and other language versions available on the MSB website.

I live in a nursing home, will I get my own brochure?

No, unfortunately. Collective housing, such as nursing homes and adapted housing, are counted as a distribution address by the distributors. This means that only one copy of the brochure will be distributed to these addresses. If you want your own copy, it can be ordered at msb.se from 18th November.

Why is MSB publishing a new brochure?

The situation in the world has greatly deteriorated since the previous brochure was sent out in 2018. War continues to go on around the world, extreme weather is becoming more common. Terror threats, cyber attacks and misleading information are used to harm and affect the Swedish population plus Sweden has also joined the NATO defence alliance.

Will there be a war in Sweden now?

No, there is no immediate threat of war against Sweden. However, the general security situation has deteriorated over time and since the previous brochure from 2018 was sent out.

What’s new in the brochure?

It has a greater focus on preparedness for war, but also addresses more areas than the previous brochure. For example, you’ll receive advice on how to act in the event of a heightened alert and in the event of a military attack. It also describes what you should take with you when evacuating and how to deal with anxiety.

Is the brochure accessible for all?

Yes, all digital versions can have the text read aloud with reading tools, and that the information is presented with good colour contrasts along with descriptive text for the images. The brochure is easier to read through the choice of font, size and line spacing.

In which languages and other versions will it be available?

From 18th November , it will be available as digital versions in msb.se in Swedish, easy Swedish, English, Arabic, Persian/Farsi, Ukrainian, Polish, Somali, Finnish, Meänkieli, Roma Arli, Northern Sami and Southern Sami. It will also be available in Swedish and English, in Swedish Sign Language, in Braille and as a short film with subtitles in different languages.

What do I do if I don’t receive the brochure?

If you have not received the brochure after the 29th of November, you can contact the distributor CityMail or Postnord, who handles the delivery in Sweden.

Is it possible to order more brochures?

Yes, you will be able to order more brochures on msb.se free of charge. In addition to Swedish, it can also be ordered in English from 18th November. Other languages will be available digitally on msb.se. You can order a maximum of 5 copies of the brochure, while municipalities, regions and other organisations can order a maximum of 1,200 copies.

Why should I go to the effort of making preparations “just in case”?

With good home preparedness, we as individuals can contribute to the whole of society being better able to cope with a difficult situation.

We must be able to survive for at least a week to meet our basic needs such as food, water and heat, without community support in the event of a serious event, which then means society can focus on helping those who need it most. If we as society can ensure that we follow the guidelines for a good home preparedness, it means we can also help others who may not be able to cope.
