No more sleepless nights.
With the feeling of spring in the air i.e. blue skies and a little less rain than normal, it triggers those thoughts around where did I leave my sleeping bag, is it still in one piece and lets head for the hills at the earliest opportunity to cocoon yourself in a warm / snug sleeping bag and contemplate life while looking at the universe far, far above us.
A good night’s sleep can make all the difference between adding that little “spring in your step” to making you feel like you have the world on your shoulders. A really comfortable sleeping bag, should be warm and inviting, suit your body type, the season and the type of trip you are going on. Plus, keep in mind when you’re looking to choose the right sleeping bag that you recognise that the suggested comfort temperature, is more of an indication.
So, when planning your next adventure be it an overnight camping trip or just deciding to sleep outside looking up at the stars – having the right sleeping bag can make such a big difference to getting a good night’s sleep.
How to chose the right sleeping bag for you.
There are some factors that you can control that will have a big impact on your sleeping arrangements, especially if you are out and about during the colder months. Don’t forget to get yourself a good sleeping mat, that extra bit of insulation between you and the ground will keep you warm and add a layer of comfort.
If your intention is to dust off your trusty old sleeping bag, may be now is the time for a change or if you are thinking about buying a sleeping bag – but need help to choose the right sleeping bag, let us help you.
Number one consideration, even before your budget, is to think about the climate you’ll be camping in, your personal preferences of sleeping bag weight versus warmth, and lastly your budget or brand preferences.
What to think about when selecting a sleeping bag:
- Temperature rating
- Insulation type
- Shape & size
- Weight & packability
- Added features
- Read reviews
- You pay for what you get
Common questions to consider on what to look for in sleeping bag.
To make this an easier experience for you, we have listed some of the common thoughts or questions to consider in order to help you choose the right sleeping bag:
- Look at the sleeping bag’s temperature rating – sleeping bags are often rated for different temperatures, such as summer, three-season, or winter bags. Consider the conditions you expect to encounter plus your own sensitivity to the cold. I am someone who often has cold feet (not about buying sleeping bags just feet that feel like blocks of ice sometimes)!!
So you may ask ” … what is a three – season bag?…” A three-season sleeping bag is designed to provide adequate warmth and comfort for camping in spring, summer, and the autumn, hence the name “three-season.” These sleeping bags are typically rated to keep you comfortable in temperatures ranging from approximately 20°F to 32°F (-6°C to 0°C) or slightly higher.
- Make sure you understand what the different insulation types mean. So for example, down insulation (think expensive) offers excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and compressibility but can lose its insulating properties when wet. Synthetic insulation is more water-resistant and retains warmth when wet, making it a better choice for damp conditions and probably more affordable.
- Determine the shape and size of your sleeping bag. Yes sleeping bags do come in different shapes, including mummy, rectangular, and semi-rectangular. Mummy-shaped bags are snug and offer better heat retention, while rectangular bags provide more room for movement but may not be as warm. Choose a shape that suits your sleeping style and comfort preferences i.e. are you the type who could sleep on a plank of wood and never move or are you more of a person who takes on the shape of a star, taking in very available inch? Additionally, consider the length and width of the bag to ensure a comfortable fit. Size tends to enter the equation if you are buying for smaller sizes i.e. children or you are on the tall side and don’t want your feet sticking out the end. Brands do have longer or wider bags to cater for the different needs, it really is not a case of one size fits all.
- Check the overall weight and packability of your sleeping bag. If you’ll be backpacking or hiking to your campsite, consider how heavy is your sleeping bag and how well can it be compressed to fit in your backpack. Lightweight and compressible bags are ideal for backpacking, as they take up less space in your pack and reduce overall weight. However, keep in mind that lighter bags may sacrifice some insulation or durability.
- You may be looking at a sleeping bag with extra “bells and whistles” with many different added features that leave you scratching your head to understand what they do or how you use them. Look for those additional features that matter to you, that enhance your camping experience, such as hood cinches, zipper guards, and stash pockets. These features can help improve insulation, prevent cold spots, and provide added convenience i.e. you can put your phone or valuables inside in a pocket rather than out, or two zips, top and bottom that enable you to open and ventilate a particular section to get the air flowing.
- Like us, read reviews from your favourite online reviewers and compare all your options before you make a purchase i.e. does it have to be brand new or would you consider a second hand but hardly used sleeping bag allowing you to buy better quality at a more affordable price? If you have a particular bag in mind, read the specific reviews on that item to get a sense of the sleeping bag performance, durability, and overall quality. Compare different models based on your individual needs and budget to find the best option for you.
- Consider this a long-term investment, that means you pay for what you get – if you think cheap and go for price rather than quality, it may be your sleep that suffers as opposed to your bank balance – but, while budget is an important consideration, investing in a high-quality sleeping bag can pay off in the long run by providing reliable warmth and comfort for years to come. Balance your budget with the features and durability you need to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep outdoors.

How to look after your sleeping bag.
So, once you eventually hit the open road, how should you care for your sleeping bag on your return? Well, avoid compressing the sleeping bag into the back of the wardrobe when not in use, store your sleeping bag in a loose, breathable storage sack or hang it in a dry place. If you do not have the possibility to hang it then periodically remove it from its sack and shake it out.
If you need to clean your bag you can spot clean it with mild soap and water for minor stains. For a more thorough cleaning, use a specialised down or synthetic sleeping bag cleaner. Avoid using harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, as they can damage the insulation.
Keeping your sleeping bag dry is essential to prevent mould and mildew growth. Hang it in a well-ventilated area or lay it flat to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight and high heat because excessive heat can damage the insulation and fabric.
Finally, check your bag for any snags or loose seams and repair it. You can repair minor damage with a patch kit or specialised repair tape.
By following these recommendations you can ensure that your sleeping bags become a trusty companion for you on your outdoor excursions!
